Matt Cutts Google Caffeine Update

At 3 months and half after the start of this blog I received the proof as all that I done was right. In New Web Site on Google Index… I inserted the first results with screen-shots as proof from the big search engines. But many people thought as it could be just a theory. Today morning I saw in Google PR 4, then in Alexa classification the place 290.000. At this time this blog is hosted free, I used only free methods and free traffic sources. Also from the main page are missing some things, exceeds the number of outbund links and there are more than 3 banners on page. That means in reality that Google Page Rank could be higher.

In the first article from this blog I wrote about the project started in July 13th with a Clickbank product and my actual blog. Search engines evolve day by day and we need to keep our attention to all their changes. Few days ago I have had an unpleasant surprise, something similar with was happening before of July 13th.

At that time in my website with a Clickbank product I set a simple 301 redirect command to the main page of that product – a setting used by years by many top marketers. Well, Google seems that then changed something in their algorithm. Matt Cutts explained some time after that the effect, something like: “if too many web sites use redirect 301 to a main website then Google will strengthen that product link, only that link will appear in SERP`s (search engine results page)” – to see Webmaster Tools video collection on Youtube –

With some changes in index I could bring my referral product page in my website, in this way protecting my referral link – the main reason for this procedure -. So the visitors could seen my referral link through the link of my website, something similar to bit.ly, ow.ly, hootsuite, tiny.url and other the same services. In 1-2 days the things come back to normal, my website appeared as usual in Google search results and in index. From then I reached to 20 keywords in the 1st page of Google, a notable result in less time I think.

3 months all things was all right, constantly sellings, better positions from a week to another, nice. As I wrote in above, few days ago it seems as Google made another change and the result was the same as before of July 13th; again the main page of Clickbank product appeared in all places with results of searches where was my website and in searching for the website with the command „http”; for the command „site:…” or by searching for „www” my website still appeared correctly. A big problem for anyone.

I don`t know if Google try to extends his rules, if for Google search engine at this time it are not enough just the classification for results and the storage of SERP`s, but I know the feeling of frustration as referral for the work of promotion done and the time spent for that… To mention as this change was just in Google, the other two giants of search engines Bing and Yahoo have not changed anything.

I could ask if a referral with some technical skills don`t have to right to obtain results from search engines for his referral page, but it`s not here the right place. For an article, news, publication is logical to be the problem with the identical content, but could be extended that problem to the referral programs, where all pages from a program have the same content?!… hm… that is it, these are the Google`s rules and we have to respect all these.

Logical, it was the time for another changing, for this time it was need to change the index page, a major changing of my website, usually a reason for reindexing or decreasing positions in the search results. I deleted also index.php from Google Webmaster Tools with the logical results of dissapearing of my website from the Google index. Usual I could have to wait another 3-6 months for indexing of my website and so on. How much time it was need for my website?

In 24 hours my website appeared in Google.ro (my country), in 48 hours appeared in Google.com and in the next day in all the results where it was before! In below is a screen shot made one hour ago.

As a extension of the project from this blog is a part, I just started another domain name Keyword tool to verify what it could be the minimum possible for a fast index in Google. Q. Firstly Michael, thank you for joining us today in your busy schedule.

A. Hey no problem. Good to be here.

Q. We all know that traffic is important but could you just explain a bit about traffic for the beginners out there?

A. Sure. Traffic is the lifeblood of any business online. Without it you just die. We all know that. But what a lot of us don’t realize is that just like everything else on the Internet traffic changes very quickly. That is, the methods of getting traffic are changing all the time and that’s where people get caught out.

Q. What do you mean by “caught out”?

A. Well people fall into the trap of thinking that just because they know one or two traffic generation methods that they are some sort of traffic master. In reality just because you know how to start a pay per click campaign or a little bit about search engines doesn’t make you anywhere near a traffic expert. I’m trying to spread the word that there is a massive array of traffic tactics that most people aren’t even aware of, let alone using or mastering.

Q. Can you give us some examples?

A. Sure. Offline for example. You might immediately think that getting traffic is a purely online activity but the truth of the matter is that there are lots of things you can be doing offline to get people into your website. And it’s usually these sorts of areas that are being under-utilized and therefore there is less competition for that traffic as well.

Q. So by offline you mean advertising offline?

A. Not necessarily. That is one method, yes, but I’m thinking of more creative ways to get people into your website. It all comes down to the fact that having asked people on my list it came as no surprise that most people want to know about free rather than paid traffic sources. I’ve had to become an expert in free ways of getting traffic in my time online.

Q. What do you mean – I thought you were running a successful online business with lots of cash flow?

A. I am. But it’s not always been this way. When I first started out in 1995 I had nothing. No money to play with. Just my own initiative and imagination.

Q. So are you saying you’re against paying for traffic online?

A. No. No I’m not saying that at all. What I’m saying is that, especially when you first start out, you always want to focus on the free methods. You get the traffic in for free, make some sales and then you can reinvest some of that money into paid methods of getting traffic. This speeds up the process.

Q. So what particular offline methods are you referring to – can you give us some examples?

A. There’s one tactic I used that costs nothing to implement, is relatively quick and ended up getting me thousands and thousands of targeted visitors into my websites. When I’ve shared this tactic with other marketers at seminars they’ve started laughing and slapping their foreheads when they saw how easy it was. They were also embarrassed that they had failed to use this tactic. It was quite amusing.

Q. So are you going to tell us what this method is?

A. No! (laughs) It’s in my course! I truly believe in rewarding those people that are most eager to learn so instead of giving away all my traffic tactics in interviews like this I’ve put some of them in an E-Book I’ve written. It is free though if people want to get it.

To use as example a smart choice of a keywords combination:

For any pro webmaster, blogger or website owner with a real interest in the results obtained from the search engines – known as having the better conversion rate – is useful a fast way to see the performances of a web page. Quirk Search Status is a free plugin for Firefox which show instantly a lot of information about a web page, but here I just mention 3 of these: Google PR, Alexa Ranking, do- or nofollow link in that web page. By analyzing the keyword chosen, we can see for today in Google search results page 588.000.000 results for that combination. It seems to be a hard competition…. Well, by searching in the first Google tool, we will see …just 210 searches in a month for that combination… and in Wordtracker: „No results found for ‘Wordpress business blog’. Please try an alternative.”. So, as keyword this combination will have too low results….

But, why this blog appear there? Quote from a blog in my profile of that Traffic Exchange:

„The same for my usual username – „doruman” and other 70-80 keywords already in the first Google page, that I not share here, because it`s about my work, a strategy that I used and it`s not fair to share all that I know, all my work from months, even years for free…

A simple answer: install that plugin and look at the PR of this search results page of Google… Yes, you see correct… these SERP`s have PR 7, my website are there dofollow backlink, so Google send me some beautiful gifts for my SEO work, few dozens of SERP`s with PR 7 or close at that!!!

- Much more than to optimize the content in your website or blog, you can`t obtain more. PageRank – the Art of Blogging

A higher PageRank is a tool desired by any webmaster and that arouses heated discussion. It is known as only Google`s employees knows the exact algorithm for PR and SERP classification for a website or blog. All the knowledge of the SEO experts id based on many tests in a long time period, their experience accumulated and a permanently monitoring in all the updates and changes of the big search engines. It is a part of the Art of Blogging.

The description of PageRank by Google:

“PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important”.”

In Wikipedia you`ll find the definition of PageRank:

„PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page,[1] used by the Google Internet search engine that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).”

Matt Cutts, the chief of the web spam team at Google stress its importance in his blog:

„Disclaimer: Even when I joined the company in 2000, Google was doing more sophisticated link computation than you would observe from the classic PageRank papers. If you believe that Google stopped innovating in link analysis, that’s a flawed assumption. Although we still refer to it as PageRank, Google’s ability to compute reputation based on links has advanced considerably over the years. I’ll do the rest of my blog post in the framework of “classic PageRank” but bear in mind that it’s not a perfect analogy.”

In BlogCatalog it is started an interesting topic about PageRank with a lot of contradictory comments about PR count or as it don`t matter.

The most of time I like to help others, to build something; I avoid to spend my time and energy in contradictory discussions that will not lead anywhere.

Google will never explain his entire algorithm of calculation, to avoid as the webmasters to start to manipulate the results of searches. So from their explanations, how much we can understand?

“PageRank Technology: PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results.”

After a long time of testing and by comparing with other SEO specialists opinions, a higher PR is an element which help in SERP. „I has PR0 and my site is in top, so PR don`t matter” you`ll want to say. Well, lets explain:

Firstly – a website with PR0 or low Page Rank will oscillate frequently in a SERP, the most of cases will decrease in positions in short time, or even will dissapear in some circumstances.

The second – not only PR will ranking high a website in search results…. the main is the SEO work well done; in a particular case: the number of the anchor texts used for a specified (top) keyword, and how much relevant are those websites where you inserted these anchor texts for that specified (top) keyword. Maybe more easy to understood, I found this explanation in „The Anatomy of…”: „PageRank is an excellent way to prioritize the results of web keyword searches.”.

Google ask nothing more than quality content and a fair work. Try to avoid using aggresive SEO techniques, automatic software to create content or backlinks, or any other exaggeration of any kind. The content is the king, but don`t forget about to apply the correct SEO rules, which is the queen – or better said, learn to use the Art of Blogging.

It is a lack of knowledge to afirm as „PR don`t count” or as „PR don`t matter at all in SERP”. As longer as Google keep the PageRank as a measuring tool for the quality of a website or blog, the work to bring a worth content and to use proper SEO will help your site to increase his PageRank that will assure a constantly position in search results and even an increasing in ranking.

The big Google use advanced techniques to show the relevant results in searches; often you`ll see a change in the position of the new, or with low PR websites, in the same day. By learning the Art of Blogging, as much you`ll understand deeply how the search engines works and you`ll use all your knowledge as best, you`ll can`t avoid using all the resources for increasing the PageRank of your site.
