The idea is to offer something of value to the reader which will get them clicking through to your link for more. These help to get visitors to your site, but they also raise your ranking in the search engines by providing your site with backlinks. The more backlinks you get, the higher you’ll rank.

But don’t overlook the real opportunity of article marketing & that is all the website owners continually visiting directory sites hungry for new content for their own sites – this is where you really gain, by them using your article with your resource box (which links to your site) you get backlinks, and over time articles go viral – its a no brainer.

Link Swaps – Should I do them?

You can also get backlinks through link swaps. This means that you find sites that are similar to yours and offer to link to them if they’ll link to you. This works very well for blogs. It takes a lot of time, but it will get you lots of traffic and backlinks. It can also be done with automated software that will send out link requests instantaneously.

But beware some automated software will result in backlinks that are not niche specific, get too many of them and Google will penalize you – so think through your strategy carefully first. For Sam & I we prefer to stick clear of both swaps (to get full value you need to monitor them) & automated software preferring article marketing, blog and forum posting.

Article marketing — is it the panacea to getting more traffic to your site? I’ll have to give this strategy a big thumbs-up, as this one strategy is responsible for the greatest amount of traffic to my site. When I stop submitting articles, my traffic takes a nose-dive. The feature of this strategy that sends traffic to my site is that I make sure that my article is keyword-optimized.

What’s a keyword? A keyword is a word, or more likely, a phrase, that will be placed in the content of your article multiple times so that when the search engine spiders see that, the spiders will determine that your page will probably provide useful content about that keyword. However, you have to be careful here not to “stuff” your article with keywords, i.e. placing them too often in the content, as that will get your article rejected by the major article directories, and may result in the search engines ignoring your article completely.

Here are my top 4 strategies for optimizing your articles to get more traffic to your site:

1. Title. Begin your article with your keyword phrase, as I have done in the title of this article. Typically, the first four words of a title seem to be the most important, so try and include your keyword phrase at the beginning of your article title.

2. Body. Your primary keyword phrase should appear in the first sentence of the first paragraph of your article. I also place it in my concluding paragraph, as well. If it fits naturally, you may also sparingly include your keyword phrase in the body of your article. At the time of this writing, Google’s optimum keyword density is between 1.5% to 2.5%, so stay within this range to avoid “keyword stuffing.”

3. Resource box. Many article directories permit you to create HTML resource boxes (author bio information), but you’re typically limited to three hyperlinks, or only two if you have used a hyperlink in the body of your article. I would recommend using only two in your resource box. One should be a link back to a page on your site that contains your call to action. The second hyperlink should serve as anchor text and contain a link back to your site (not the home page) using a keyword for which you want to be found.

4. Article summary/. Many article directories ask that you include a 450-character summary or synopsis of the article as a part of the submission process. Make sure that your keyword phrase is contained in your article summary, as well.

So, back to the article marketing. Once you get going with writing it can get easier. The first one I did was a little stiff and awkward – then as time went on and I did more, the words just seemed to flow and now I feel comfortable writing them really quite rapidly. If at first, you are not sure it’s for you – try a few more and you’ll improve and warm up.

One of the important elements of article marketing is that you use keywords. Keywords or key-phrases are the terms that people use to search for information on the internet. So you’ll need to select a suitable key phrase and you’ll need to use that several times in the article. This will make it more likely to show up in search engine results.

For this article, I have chosen the term ‘make money online’. So I need to use that once per 100 words for it to be most effective for the search engines to find my article.

Next you’ll need to decide what you would like your article to be about. Don’t try to sell your products in your article, just stick to giving educational and informative information. You can use your resource box for the selling part. In there you will need to add your name and link to your website or product page. You can use anchor text words too for this – you might even want to use your keyword – but you don’t have to. Anchor text words are the words that are highlighted with a clickable link to another internet site.

Once you select your topic, then you should pick a headline that you feel will attract readers to want to click to find out what your article is about. This is the fun part – but also probably the hardest part of the whole project.

Once you’ve completed your article, then you can submit it to article directories. There are many of these, all full of articles that have been written by other people who are trying to make money online too.

So, as you can see article marketing is really quite easy and it works. I’ve used it as part of my marketing arsenal for many years and now I’ve even made a business out of telling people how they can make money online by using techniques like article marketing and other online marketing methods.
