For whatever reason, those who make videos rarely get everything in they want you to see. One way to get more in as most producers, news shows and professional movie makers know is to use video archive footage. As you prep for your next project, take a look at these tips on how to take advantage of archival film footage. Follow some of these tips, and you’ll end up with the best video project you’ve ever done.

1. Add some excitement. The medium of video is the medium of motion. Don’t ever let the screen remain static. Archival film footage is full of exciting motion, including fast-driving cars, extreme sports maneuvers, and even explosions. Maybe you’re not trying to make a Hollywood blockbuster, but you certainly can add some stunning scenes with a few well-chosen stock footage clips.

2. Advanced techniques such as layering video enables you to use two or more clips at the same time to add depth of texture and to intensify visual interest.

3. Select relevant news scenes. Many stock footage sites provide news clips. Adding online news footage is a great way to keep your video fresh, contemporary, and trustworthy.

4. Give it background. Quality video editing software (such as After Effects) allows you to add a background to many videos. When you’re using archival film footage of an individual person in motion, sports equipment, or a subject matter that lacks an interesting background, you can add your own. Key out black, white, or boring backgrounds to add a custom-designed background, text, or another layer of video.

5. By using video editing software to add effects such as rolls, fades and other transitions, archival film footage that may need some sprucing up becomes a lot more effective. Even great archival footage that’s cropped, shaded, rotated, slowed down or even sped up can be a lot more effective in getting your message across. You will need to integrate footage into your video that will be a beautiful fit for your video and shown in a way that you will be able to take ownership of.

6. One way to make your video project more expansive is to incorporate aerial videography of fantastic views such as shots over the Andes Mountains. Views like these not only look awesome and add impressiveness to your project, but with inexpensive stock footage you save thousands of dollars by not having to send thousands of dollars chartering flights and renting equipment.

With all the archival film footage available such as sports and news videos, they are still subject to all copyright laws unless they’re in the public domain. Most archival film footage websites will provide information and/or the necessary permission you need, but it helps to have some awareness of the rules and regulations governing the use of it.

—————————————————-
Choosing the right footage from an extensive video archive library can make your presentation go from ho-hum to wow. Lewis Williamson uses sports and new videos anytime he wants to make a statement on any of his projects.
